UWE Spring concert Colston Hall

Ali is looking forward to performing with UWE in their Spring Concert at the Colston Hall this Saturday (24th March). The orchestra will be performing Holst’s ever popular ‘The Planets’ suite with its wonderfully rousing tunes. The UWE singers will continue the concert joined by the magnificent Bournemouth Symphony Chorus , BackBeat Percussion and the soprano Belinda Evans for Fanshawe’s African Sanctus - an incredible work taking the listener on a journey through Africa. The Vampire – An Opera

From the 9th to the 12th May, Bristol Opera (www.bristolopera.org.uk) is performing The Vampire and Matthew is lucky enough to be playing in it. This is a little known piece by Heinrich Marschner which some may remember was serialized on the BBC as ‘The Vampire – A Soap Opera’ some twenty years ago in a production by Janet Street-Porter!

This is not that version. Rather, it is the original from 1828 but with a translation specifically for Bristol Opera by the Bradford based director and actor Graham Billing. Its plot could easily be the basis for a blockbuster movie. A vampire is given 24 hours to suck the blood from 3 women in order to live for another year. Two women are quickly found and killed, a third one in a thrilling sequence of events manages to keep alive. If you like the sound of that, maybe you’re a fan of the Vampire Diaries with all its romance, then a night out at one of the shows is a must. It has all the dark atmospherics of Bram Stokers Dracula and pre-dates it by nearly 80 years! The music sits somewhere between Weber and early (Flying Dutchman) Wagner and what with all the high drama and tension that this brings, it makes it the perfect accompaniment to the drama on stage.

This is the first time Matthew has worked with Bristol Opera and he is very much looking forward to it!

Song for David by Nigel P Draycott

Song for David

This is a recording of a most beautiful piece of music that we made in early spring last year. It was written by Nigel Draycott, a composer of touching, atmospheric, lyrical and very English music who sadly died before he was 30. He left a large number of pieces which went largely unheard or unperformed.

For a while his sister Jane and his friends Janice Thompson and Derek Stuart Clark, the conductor in this performance and his friend from their Academy days, had been exploring the possibility of playing and recording a number of his pieces and in March 2011 this became a reality. We, along with flautists Terri and Tim Fosker spent the day at Bristol University’s Victoria Rooms recording 9 of his works.

When the time came to book players for the session, Derek asked The Lochrian Ensemble because he knew both Cath and Matthew from the many times they have deputised in The Pump Room Trio in Bath where he is the pianist.

This was a wonderful and moving experience and a day we all really enjoyed and we look forward to more of Nigel’s music being released in the world.
